Dr. Raghu Adiga: From Infectious Disease Specialist to Liberty Hospital's Healing Leader

When Dr. Raghu Adiga arrived at Liberty Hospital in 2004, he came as a specialist in infectious diseases—the kind of doctor you need but hope not to see too often. More than two decades later, he leads the entire health system. His unexpected ascent reflects something distinctive about his approach to medicine: the belief that clinical expertise and deep community connection belong together.

Adiga began practicing medicine in Missouri in 1997, bringing training from prestigious institutions. He earned his medical degree from Bangalore University in India before completing his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago. His infectious disease fellowship training spanned the University of Chicago and the University of Missouri, Columbia—a rigorous path that prepared him for both complex diagnostics and leadership.

But credentials alone don't explain his trajectory. After years in senior administrative leadership, most recently as Chief Medical Officer, the Liberty Hospital Board of Trustees named him President and CEO in September 2022, following the retirement of long-time leader David Feess. Dennis Carter, Board chairman, noted that Adiga's "exemplary leadership and expertise position him well to carry forward the health system's vision and approach to expanding services to benefit the health and well-being of those living in and around the Northland."

What sets Adiga apart is his philosophy of healthcare rooted in something beyond medicine. He believes that "empathy, compassion and respect for fellow human beings are the bedrocks of healthcare delivery." This isn't abstract thinking—it shaped how he led during the COVID-19 pandemic. As one of the region's leading infectious disease specialists, he provided critical guidance not just to Liberty Hospital but to numerous Northland and Kansas City organizations navigating an unprecedented crisis. William Jewell College honored him with the William F. Yates Medallion for Distinguished Service in 2021 specifically for his dedication to community health and safety during the pandemic.

The recognition extends across the region. Ingram's Magazine has named him to "Top Doctors in Kansas City" (2012) and "Healthcare Heroes" (2021). In 2022, the Kansas City Business Journal recognized him among "Twenty to Know in Healthcare." In 2020, he became a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America—one of the highest honors in his specialty.

Yet perhaps most significantly, he's also served as President of both the Kansas City Infectious Disease Society and Kansas City Southwest Clinical Society, demonstrating leadership that extends beyond any single institution.

The system he took charge of in 2022 spanned 15 primary and specialty-care clinics and 1,700 employees. Then came the biggest milestone of his tenure: on July 1, 2024, Liberty Hospital officially joined The University of Kansas Health System, a transition Adiga steered as Liberty's chief executive. Today he leads the Liberty market as CEO and serves as a senior vice president in the health system's Kansas City division.
