Raising bilingual kids without the guilt

The guilt is real — and misplaced. For two years I treated Telugu like a subject: flashcards, worksheets, a reward chart. My daughter treated it like homework, because I had made it homework.

What backfired

Correcting her mid-sentence. Every correction taught her that Telugu was a place she could be wrong, and English was a place she was safe. She chose safe.

What we do now

We LIVE it instead of teaching it. Telugu is the kitchen language — cooking, gossip, phone calls to ammamma on speaker. No corrections, no charts. The tiny wins added up: last month she switched languages mid-joke to land the punchline for her grandmother. A worksheet never did that.
