The phone question β what KC parents actually did in Grade 5
KC Gunda Β· Jul 9
Half the class "has a phone" by spring β sort of. We got tired of guessing, so we asked two dozen families in the community what they actually did. The answers were more reassuring than the group-chat panic suggests.
What the survey said
- Watches and dumb phones dominate Grade 5 β call/text to three numbers, no browser, done
- Real smartphones mostly arrive Grade 7β8, and almost every parent who went earlier said they'd wait longer next time
- Group-chat drama starts in Grade 6 regardless of what device your kid has
The one thing the happy families shared
They decided WITH another family. A pact of two or three families removes the "but EVERYONE has one" lever entirely β your kid's everyone is the same three kids. It costs one awkward coffee conversation and saves two years of nagging.
