Grade 1 math is won in the head, not on fingers — and definitely not on flashcards, which taught our son to fear being timed before he could add. What worked was making ten a GAME.
The rotation that stuck
- Ten-frames on the fridge — magnetic dots; "how many more to ten?" while dinner cooks
- "Make ten" with cards — flip two, first to shout the pair that makes ten keeps them
- Two minutes at dinner — "I have 7, how many hiding?" No paper, no pressure
The flashcard mistake
We started with timed flashcards because that's what we grew up with. Two weeks in, he'd hide under the table when the box came out. It took a month of games to undo — the fluency came anyway, just through play. Same destination, zero tears.
