First real friendships — playdates beat programs

We over-scheduled activities and under-scheduled friends. It took a quiet, slightly lonely fall to notice that Grade 1 is when kids pick their people — and our son had no unstructured time to do the picking.

What we changed

One standing Saturday playdate — same friend, alternating houses, no plan. That's it. We dropped one enrichment class to make room, which felt like heresy in our circle.

What it did

More for his confidence than three enrichment classes combined. A kid with a best friend walks into school differently on Monday. The class we dropped? Nobody remembers what it even was.

Activities are wonderful — Scouts, cricket, music all have their place. Just don't let the calendar squeeze out the one thing Grade 1 is actually for.
